A look inside Coventry Jaguar Factory after the 1957 fire ripped through

The factory and hundreds of cars were destroyed.

Back in 1957, a fire ripped through Coventry’s Jaguar factory. On February 12, the blaze broke out at the Browns Lane, Allesley plant.

It started in one of the main assembly halls on the Tuesday evening. At the time it was reported all but a few staff members had left when the fire consumed a third of the factory.

Hundreds of newly built cars were destroyed but luckily no one was seriously injured. And only a few hours after fire crews extinguished the fire, Jaguar workers returned to clear the assembly lines of wreckage – they managed to save bolts and other spare parts which were used again.
